Syllabus - French 1 & 1DPAC

Course Description:

French 1 & French 1(DPAC) provide students with an introductory knowledge of basic French language and culture. Assessment and practice are presented in the key areas of listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in French to help students develop practical, basic conversation skills.

 

This course includes a broad series of lessons and activities that offer a variety of modalities for ultimate student engagement and content retention. Each thematic unit will introduce new vocabulary and grammar concepts through listening comprehension, speaking, and writing activities. Grammatical structures are practiced in innovative and interesting ways with a variety of learning styles in mind. The course has been aligned to meet all national standards.

Grading system:

            Minor Grades:

10%                 Participation

                        30%                 Daily work/Homework

            Major Grades:

                        30%                 Quizzes

                        30%                 Tests

           

           

Quizzes:

            Quizzes are considered a Major Grade because students can expect to have 2-3 quizzes per week, which constitutes a significant portion of how students are assessed for learning. Quizzes may cover vocabulary, grammar topics, French culture, or any other topic discussed in class. At the end of the 9-week grading period, the lowest Quiz grade will be dropped.

 

Tests:

            Students will have 3-4 tests per 9-week grading period.  Tests will cover multiple sections of vocabulary, various grammar concepts or other topics covered in class.  Students will be given approximately 1 week’s notice before a test. If a student fails a test, they can re-test as laid out in the student handbook. Test grades cannot be dropped.

 

If a student is absent, any quiz or test that is missed will need to be made up on the student’s time (during Deer Time or before school). Students will have 1 week after an absence to make up tests & quizzes.

 

 

Daily work/Homework:

            Although homework is not the primary source of instruction in this class, the teacher reserves the right to assign homework as she deems appropriate. The bulk of the assignments in this grading category will be completed during class time, often in groups or with a partner. Any assignments not completed during class will be considered homework and will be due the following class period.

 

If a student misses a class for any reason, it is his/her responsibility to find out what assignments were missed, to get notes over material covered in class that day (including vocabulary lists), and to make arrangements with the teacher to take care of any make-up work resulting from the absence.

 

Extra Credit:

The teacher may periodically offer opportunities for students to receive extra credit in the course, though generally extra credit is NOT given if the student has not completed all previously required course work.

• All assignments given in class CAN be completed using the resources made available to the students, either through vocabulary lists, grammar notes, cultural information, or other resources provided by the teacher, especially in French 1 & 1DPAC.
