Child Development Syllabus:
Course Description:
Child development is a technical course that addresses knowledge and skills related to child growth and development from prenatal through school age. This program is designed to give the student a practical working knowledge of the child. The Child Development Program is designed to prepare students to make a positive difference in the growing field of early childhood education. This program prepares successful students with the knowledge to understand the needs of young children, including children with special needs and the resources to develop appropriate learning environments for them.
Units of Study:
Unit 1: Children and Families in Today's World
Unit 2: Pregnancy and Childbirth
Unit 3: Infancy
Unit 4: The Toddler Years
Unit 5: The Preschool Years
Unit 6: The School-aged Years
Unit 7: Guiding and Caring for Children
Grading Policy:
- 60% Exams/Projects
- 40% Daily Work/Journal Entries/Article Reviews
Absent/Make-Up Work: It is the student's responsibility to check in with the teacher when they return back to class to find out what they have missed. For each day a student is absent is the amount of days they have to submit their work. After that day, the work will be accepted with a late penalty. Always remember to check Canvas.
Late Work: is accepted with 10 points off each day it is late.
Extra Credit: There will be opportunists for extra credit so be sure to take advantage! Only ask for extra credit if you have turned in all other work that is due.
Class Expectations:
- Students will maintain a respectful and positive attitude toward the teacher and classmates.
- Be on time! If a student is late to class a tardy will be issued unless the tardy is excused with a hall pass.
- Stay on task! Do not use a device without permission, do not work on other classwork unless you are completed with this classwork first.
- Always bring your charged iPad to class.
- Keep all graded work, (online and paper). DO NOT throw away or delete graded assignments until After you receive you report card. You must have the paper with the grade written on it in order for me to make changes should there ever be a mistake.
- While using Apple Classroom make sure your Bluetooth is on and Airplane mode is off
- 10/10 Rule- be present in the first and last 10 minutes of class.
- All policies in the STUDENT HANDBOOK will be followed.
- Students will be held responsible for equipment and furniture at their workstation.
- Remain in your seat until you are dismissed at the end of the class. Do not crowd around
the door waiting for the bell. - When leaving class, clean work area, throw away trash and push chair under table.

House Bill 1481: Electronic Device Policy
Deer Park High School – South CampusIn compliance with House Bill 1481, students are prohibited from using personal communication devices during the instructional day. This includes:
- Cell phones
- Smartwatches
- Earbuds and headphones
- Tablets
- Any device capable of texting, calling, recording, or accessing the internet
Effective Immediately, the following guidelines will be enforced at South Campus:
1. Device Use is Prohibited During School Hours
All personal communication devices must be powered off and stored away from the start of the school day until dismissal.
- For most students, this timeframe is 8:22 a.m. to 3:55 p.m.
- For students enrolled in a flex class, the school day begins at 7:15 a.m.
- If a student has an off-period, he/she must still comply with the policy while on campus.
2. Devices May Not Be Carried on the Body
All devices must be turned off and placed inside the student’s backpack.
Backpacks, purses, and bags will be stored in a designated area within each classroom to help prevent access or distractions during instructional time.If your student is uncomfortable leaving personal items in a classroom storage area due to concerns about theft, we recommend keeping those items at home.
Students who do not carry a bag may check in their devices at the front office at the beginning of the school day.
